Racing Class

The youth racing class will not be available for the summer 2023 season.

Racing Class Description:

The racing class is for more advanced sailors, or students who want more experience sailing throughout the summer. To be in racing class, a student must have instructor approval, as well as be at least a Class 2 sailor (2nd Mate). This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about sailing and racing techniques, as well as building better boat handling skills. Students will mainly sail Flying Juniors (FJs), which are a small boat commonly used for high school or college level racing. These lessons are also a very good way to learn the skills necessary for racing Ensigns, a type of larger boat with a 4-person crew.  Taking the racing class helps students use the skills they have learned in sailing school, and develop a lifelong love of sailing. 

Ensign Racing

After being a part of the racing class, many of our sailors move on to racing Ensigns, a 22-foot-long boat with a crew of 4. There are Wednesday night Ensign races in Marquette, and two youth boats, Ariadne and Eugenia, currently compete regularly in these races, against boats with far more experience. The boats' crews are made up almost entirely of MJYC sailors and instructors. Racing Ensigns can lead to going to regional and national regattas with one of the crews.
